Watchmen

Got a chance to see Watchmen last night ... and DAMN if I didn't really love it. I mean, it's definitely not for everyone (which would explain a lot of the criticism of it) but I thought it was a pretty great film. Definitely dark, and subversive ... but really sharp and intelligent and a very nice homage to the source material, one of the most loved graphic novels of all time. As far as superhero/comic book movies, this one is head and shoulders above the rest. Great characters, interesting themes, awesome music, great settings and costumes ... really interesting integration with actual history and just a totally immersive overall feel. Damn damn DAMN good movie. And well worth seeing on the big screen. I'll probably see it twice in the theatre. Good shit. Killing it at the box office. 55 million this week ...

Official trailer HERE

Website (well worth checking out)

Just got back from Peru, and can't wait to see this! I've been reading up on this; amazingly enough, even Alan Moore (the pen behind the story) endorses this movie. He's written a few highly acclaimed graphic novels that have been turned into movies... e.g V for Vendetta, and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen to name a couple. He has washed his hands in disgust for all film adaptions of his works... except for Watchmen.

If you don't have time to read the novel (which you really should), there's a more easily digestible, unabridged, narrated animated version (that actually uses vectorized frames from the comic itself... think scanner darkly meets south park). It's available for cheap from the iTunes store. Warning: One narrator does all the voices, which can be confusing, annoying, and comical at times.

Spitting venom over a movie is not much of an endorsement.

Hmmm... I'm not sure where I read that quote that he saw it and liked it. Trying to find it, but can't now. Maybe I dreamed it up? In any case, a great film, and destined to be a cult classic. It's tanking because the marketing sucked, and most of the people showing up were expecting something like the x-men or spiderman.
